Meeting the designer!

Yesterday I got the opportunity to meet with my assigned desgner, Emily Moody.

We discussed the evolution of her design ideas, the process, her inspiration, the concept, colours, themes, trends, key features, her consumer.

My main findings from the discussion were as follows:

She has titled her collection 'Country Side Destruction' as the main concept of the collection is how the country side has been destroyed by construction and how the two lanscapes, of city and countryside, contrast.

She has taken the majority of her inspiration from paintings and artwork which relfect this.

On a social level she has explored how construction and farm work are primarily men's world's, therefore she decided to work out how the shapes and silhouettes from these typical industrial, male  uniforms could be made feminine.

The main features of her design ideas are; big pockets, pleats, cheques and structural shapes.

The main aesthetics of her collection and overall design style is sportswear combined with femininity.

She will produce sustainable products by utilising recycled denim and organic jersey.

She places herself in the market of Sacai, a high-end designer that uses feminine and experimental styles. She believes, as well as Sacai, her main competitors will be Stella McCartney and Schouler.

She see's her clothes being sold being sold in stores such as high-end clothing shop, Flannels, in small boutiques and online on her own brands website.

Her target consumer will be a twenty-something model who enjoys travelling and quirky styles with money to spend.

The purpose of her designs are to offer comfortable, yet fashionable day wear.

Her main ethos and message is sustainability and female empowerment through masculine shapes made feminine.

My thoughts:

I really enjoyed looking at the process of designing a collection, from researching the concept to producing a wide range of design ideas and one main design idea.

I find her concept of the contrast of construction to countryside interesting. I particularly like the way she has explored the social aspects of both landscapes being male dominated at the same time as representing the physical visual contrasts.

So far, as there are a lot of different aspects to her collection, I think it would be interesting to transfer just one or two of these into future collections for her brand to create a distinctive identity to her brand. For example continuing to use sportswear styles.

As far as branding goes it is clear the macro/social trends of feminisim and sustainability are important to her and therefore it will be crucial to communicate these as clear messages and values throughout the brand.

As she has a specific target consumer it will be important to gain an understanding of their values, personality and behaviours to communicate the brand appropriately so that it will capture their attention, attract them to the brand and primarily, drive sales.

Overall I look forward to discovering how the process of this collaboration will develop and the results it will produce; especially now that I have more of an understanding of what type of brand I will be helping to launch.
